Another week, another Mexican wrestling film. This one involves another mad doctor, Dr. Orlak (har har) starts kidnapping scientist and turning them into zombies with the aid of a giant robot he has created, which looks like Pizza The Hut’s sidekick (“Or else Pizza is gonna send out for you!”). When one of the scientists is the uncle of champion Gaby Reina, a group of Mexican luchadoras get involved. After the destruction of his robot, Dr. Orlak wants revenge, and creates a new robot to kill Gaby Reina, not in the streets, but in the ring!
This is one of the dullest lucha libre films I’ve seen in a while, and I’ve seen many turds in my day. Sadly the story isn’t very interesting and the characters are truly one-dimensional. Only the star, Gaby Reina (who’d play Mama Elena from Como Agua Para Chocolate two decades later) , who’s tall and beautiful and has genuine talent in the ring, was able to hold my interest. That’s why the best part of the film takes place in the third act, where Gaby Reina has to confront the doctor’s wrestling robot, Elektra. It’s a pretty good match, filmed well and with a lot of energy, and they even make you feel like you’re right there in the audience. Sadly that last-minute stroke of genius wasn’t enough to save the film, with it’s two previously terrible acts. Watch it for the end fight!
